Your Choice: Gamble in the Casino or Own the Casino?
Submitted by Justin Hayek on October 21st, 2015Imagine the unlikely scenario where you're given the choice between two career options: 1) trying to make a living gambling in a casino or 2) owning a casino. Which would you choose? Unless you're this guy...

you're much better off owning the casino of course. Sure, as a gambler, you could win every once in a while but over the long term, the casino knows and you should too, 'the house' always wins. That's because each game is tilted in favour of the casino. A slight edge, albeit as small as it may be, guarantees that in the long run the casino will be profitable in the game.
What does this have to do with investing, you ask?
Your choices of investments resembles a roulette wheel like the below. But rather than choosing between numbers, your choices are between a universe of stocks, bonds, real estate and preferred shares. Each time you invest, you're choosing to 'bet' on a particular investment. Again, you could hit it big every once in a while but over the long term, the market knows and you should too, the market always wins.
With that being said, you would be better off owning the wheel (that is, the entire market) rather than gamble on a particular outcome. By owning multiple asset classes, be it stocks, bonds, real estate and preferred shares, you can own the entire market and put the odds in your favour. More on this here.
